I promised you I'd do some research on your favourite guy-this is what I came up with:
Salvatore Riina-also known as Toto Riina or 'The Beast' was born in 1930. He was raised in Corleone and joined the Corleonisi as a young adult.
In his twenties he served a sentence for manslaughter after capping a guy during an arguement.
Because Riina, Bernado Provenzan, and Luciano came from a relatively small town, Palermo bosses often referred to the Corleonisi as 'i viddani'-"the peasants".
In the 1960s, Riina, Leggio, and Provenzano were forced into hiding due to an arrest warrant for a life sentence for murder-but it was 'in absentia sentence'
-fugitive living.
In '74 when Leggio was arrested and imprisoned for life, and even though he retained his title behind bars, Riina was now the effective head of the Corleonisi.
And so, his plans for a war against the rival Mafia Families begun-he wanted control over the international heroin trade, especially with regards to the refining and exporting of the narcotic.
In '81 Corleonisi's rivals Bontate and Inzerello were both gunned down, as well as various relatives and associates- and by the end of the year so was Antonino Badalameti-another boss of one of the Palermo families.
Cops and prosecutors also saw the end of Pino Greco's pece, one of Riina's favourite hitmen. Go that AK-47!
By my figures at least 1000 Mafiosi were killed by Riina-talk about the meaning of 'decimation', about 200 more just vanished.
I'm not even gonna go into the info I dug up on "The Room of Death".
But these tactics backfired in '82 when Tommaso Buscetta turned informant (he was from one of the losing families-Riina clipped a few of his friends)-Buscetta provided Falcone a great deal of information and Riina picked up another life sentence in the Maxi Trials-but yet another 'in absentia' as Riina was still a fugitive.
When '92 came around Riina ordered the bombings of Falcone and Borsellino.
In '93 he was picked up in Palermo where he had been all along-3 decades-63 years old.
Bernado Provenzano took over the org.
Riina was married and had four children. His two sons, Giovanni and Giuseppe, followed in their fathers footsteps and joined him in the slammer.
If gaps need to be filled let me know.
